Separating a complex Object from its background and adding a different one

This will help you if you want to change or remove the background of an image.Ok. Let's begin. Open up your file in Photoshop. I will be using this file to separate the tree from its background.

Now we will use the 'Extract' Filter to remove the background. Go to Filter > Extract  and set the following settings. You can change the highlight colour to make it stand out when used on your image. I've used red.

Now, zoom in using the zoom tool or press Ctrl ++. Select the paint brush tool from the left and outline your image. In case you make a mistake, just use the eraser tool on the left and correct it.

After you finish, examine the edges for mistakes and correct them by either using the brush or the eraser.

Next, use the fill tool on the left and fill in the areas you just outlined.

Now press OK and the background would have been removed.
Save this as a new file. In case your picture has a shadow, open your original file again and extract the shadow by similar procedures.

Drag the shadow onto the image. Next, right click the shadow layer in the layer window* on the right and go to Blending options. There, go to colour overlay and set colour to black. Press OK. Then, reduce the opacity of the layer to 50%. The opacity option is on the top right of the layer window. Once you've done this go to the image layer and use the smudge tool (its icon is a finger) from the tool bar (Brush size = 2 - 4 px, strength = 70%) near the borders. Do the same for the shadow layer as well

*if the layer window is not visible, press F7

Next, open up your new background image and adjust its brightness and contrast to match the image.

Drag the background on to the image file. Position the image and shadow appropriately.
